Construction of a new suburb in Melbourne’s west called Mount Atkinson will begin by the end of the year.
The suburb is planned to house 22,000 people in the next 15 years and is located to the south-west of Caroline Springs.
Featuring four new schools, railway station and around 8000 houses to be built, the suburb should give a shot in the arm to housing affordability.
Mount Atkinson will be 23 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD and is part of the State Government’s plans to rezone 100,000 lots of land in growth areas by the end of 2018.
The schools and railway station may not be ready by the time the first residents move into the new suburb.
Local MP Marlene Kairouz told Domain that property buyers in the area will be told what services will be ready.
“There are in fact new rules in place that developers have to outline what services are in place and what infrastructure is in place,” she said.
Anthony Caligiuri is the director of Mount Atkinson Holdings who are developing the suburb and he said the site will become the Glen Waverley of Melbourne’s west.
“If we were the same distance on the other side of the city, we’d be in Glen Waverley,” he told Domain.
