Melbourne holds on to world’s most liveable city tag for another year

Melbourne’s property market took a nice shot in the arm today after the city was named the world’s most liveable by The Economist for the 6th year in a row.

An understandably happy Lord Mayor Robert Doyle was quick to promote the win on social media and spoke to The Age.

“We do not take this titled for granted and are constantly planning and implementing policies that will continue to improve our quality of life,” he said.

“It’s an exciting time in Melbourne: We’ve got many major infrastructure projects underway, including the Metro Tunnel and the proposed renewal of the Queen Victoria Market precinct.”

Adelaide also kept the same ranking as last year, coming in at fifth again, while Australia’s most expensive property market – Sydney – went tumbling out of the top ten to sit at 11th.

Melbourne’s deputy lord mayor Susan Riley also chipped in to have her say on the results.

“The Queen Victoria Market makeover is another way we can go forward,” she told The Age, adding she thought Melbourne also needed to plant more trees and make life easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

The liveability survey run by The Economist takes in factors such as stability, healthcare and education services, infrastructure, culture and environment.
